Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against endorsing what he termed as an unsustainable minimum wage. Tinubu, in his recent Democracy Day address, pledged to send an executive bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly for approval.

Tinubu is faced with deciding between the proposed ₦62,000 wage by the government and private sector and the ₦250,000 demand from Organised Labour. However, Soludo, speaking at ‘The Platform Nigeria’ event organized by a Lagos-based church to commemorate the 2024 Democracy Day, expressed concern for Tinubu if he approves an unsustainable minimum wage.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cautioned that an unsustainable wage could result in job losses and exacerbate economic challenges in the country. Soludo highlighted that even with the best estimates, the Federal Government’s revenue this year is unlikely to exceed N17 trillion.

He emphasized that distributing this revenue across all Nigerians would amount to N6,160 per person per month. Soludo pointed out that not all private sector employers could afford the proposed ₦62,000 wage, as he discovered from discussions with entrepreneurs in the state.

Soludo, along with his 35 colleagues in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, had previously labeled Labour’s minimum wage demands as unsustainable.
