Governor Dauda Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, stated on Monday that the court rejected Matawalle’s claims over the ownership of the official vehicles. The former governor and his cabinet members had taken away all official vehicles belonging to the state government, leaving the present administration without the means to operate.
Recalling events from June, the Zamfara State government had given Matawalle and his deputy five working days to return the official vehicles. However, all demands proved unsuccessful, leading the state government to obtain a court order for their retrieval. Over 50 vehicles were subsequently recovered by the police.
After the recovery, Matawalle sought legal recourse by filing a case at the Federal High Court in Gusau, obtaining an order for the return of the vehicles to him. Additionally, he filed a separate suit at the same court, seeking to enforce his fundamental right to own property, including the contested vehicles.
The Zamfara State Government requested the transfer of the case to another jurisdiction of the Federal High Court. On Friday, the Federal High Court in Sokoto dismissed the matter, refusing the reliefs sought by Matawalle and rejecting his claim to ownership of the official vehicles. Consequently, the vehicles are still considered the property of the Zamfara State government.
The government expressed its commitment to recovering all assets rightfully belonging to the people through an all-encompassing rescue mission. The court’s judgment is seen as an encouragement to ensure justice prevails and hold all perpetrators of financial misconduct in Zamfara accountable.
