Coutinho Reunites With Neymar At Santos After Walking Away From Vasco

Philippe Coutinho has completed a move to Santos until the end of the season, reuniting with close friend and Brazil teammate Neymar at club level for the first time.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the 34-year-old midfielder joined Santos as a free agent after leaving Vasco da Gama in February following the end of his second spell with his boyhood club. Santos confirmed his arrival on Monday and handed him the number 11 shirt.

Coutinho initially returned to Vasco on loan from Aston Villa in July 2024 before making the move permanent. He went on to make 81 appearances for the Brazilian club but departed in February after struggling with severe mental exhaustion and hostility from sections of the supporters.

During his presentation at Santos, Coutinho opened up about the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure from Vasco and revealed that he made significant financial sacrifices to return to the club.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona star disclosed that he still had one year remaining on his Aston Villa contract when he decided to return to Vasco. He said he gave up a year’s salary and money owed to him by the English club because he wanted to make his return happen without Vasco having to pay a transfer fee.

Coutinho explained that his decision to leave Vasco was ultimately influenced by his deteriorating mental state, particularly after the club suffered disappointment in the Copa do Brasil and he subsequently faced abuse from some supporters at the Estádio São Januário.

He said prioritising his health became the most difficult decision he had ever made, admitting that he had reached a point where he could no longer contribute effectively to the team.

Santos welcomed the midfielder with a special tribute featuring images of Coutinho and Neymar as teenagers, recreating a pose from their younger days. Neymar also embraced his longtime friend inside the dressing room after his arrival.

Coutinho expressed his excitement over the reunion, describing the moment as something he did not want to wake up from.

The Brazilian began his professional career at Vasco before moving to Europe, where he represented Inter Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Aston Villa. He also spent time with Qatari side Al-Duhail.

During his first spell at Liverpool, Coutinho established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout attacking midfielders, scoring 54 goals in 201 appearances before completing a reported £142 million move to Barcelona in 2018.
