The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has affirmed its determination to escalate its drive against underage individuals engaged in internet fraud, popularly termed as ‘Yahoo Yahoo,’ who exploit legal documents to facilitate their illicit activities. This commitment was reiterated by Effa Okim, the Zonal Director of EFCC overseeing Edo, Delta, and Ondo states, during a courtesy visit to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by Festus Alenkhe.
Okim highlighted that these young fraudsters often manipulate age declarations to establish bank accounts and acquire driver’s licenses, thereby facilitating the laundering of their ill-gotten gains.
The EFCC plans to target not just the perpetrators but also governmental agencies and individuals complicit in issuing these falsified documents.
“Edo State ranks second only to Lagos in terms of convictions for internet fraud,” Okim disclosed, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue within the region.
He expressed concern over the fact that a state with such historical significance should be characterized by such elevated levels of criminal activity.
Furthermore, the Zonal Director criticized the role of parents in these crimes, noting instances where parents defend their convicted children by claiming they are minors, despite previous instances of fraudulent age declarations.
“We frequently encounter parents asserting their children’s minority status following arrests, yet they were nowhere to be found when these minors illicitly obtained driver’s licenses or opened bank accounts,” Okim remarked.
He challenged parents regarding their absence during their children’s procurement of such documents and their irresponsible financial behaviors.
Okim revealed that the anti-graft agency intends to collaborate with the media to amplify the visibility of their enforcement efforts and to educate the public about the serious repercussions of internet fraud.
