Obi, who has been deeply involved in humanitarian work across Nigeria, had intended to visit the IDP camps in Benue as part of his outreach efforts. He has previously visited camps in Plateau, Southern Kaduna, and Nasarawa states, where he interacted with displaced families, delivered aid, and called for government intervention.
His visit to Plateau State garnered national attention after he met with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and visited victims of herdsmen attacks. However, his proposed visit to Benue became a political controversy within the state’s power circles.
In a statement posted on his handle on Monday evening, April 14, 2025, Peter Obi said that the treatment he received in Benue was a reminder of the many challenges he has faced in his political career since declaring his presidential bid. He added that the situation was a clear indication that he must start speaking out about issues affecting him.
Obi shared that despite his attempts to reach Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, he was unsuccessful. His planned visit was abruptly halted when his security team informed him of the decision by the State Government to block it.
In his statement, Obi said, “Ordinarily, I would not have commented on this issue, as I have faced much worse in my political journey since declaring for the presidency. However, the recent developments demand that I speak up now.”
He further explained that although he was unsure whether Governor Alia was fully aware of the situation, he had exhausted all means of contacting him. Obi chose to use the platform to ensure his message was heard.
Obi had initially planned to visit both Plateau and Benue states on April 13 and 14, 2025, respectively, with plans to meet the governors and visit the IDP camps and nursing schools in both states to offer his support.
