The removal of subsidies often results in austerity measures that negatively affect small businesses and the middle class, while larger corporations can weather the impact by optimizing costs and maximizing profits. However, this approach might not prioritize job creation but rather cater to shareholder interests.

The cost of petrol in Nigeria affects not only vehicles but millions of businesses that heavily rely on it as their primary energy source, leading to rising expenses and contracting businesses as customers cut back on spending.

The concern is raised that although Nigeria can handle a subsidy regime, an inflated one is unsustainable. The loopholes in the subsidy scheme should be identified and addressed to ensure its viability.

The discussion also points out that Nigeria is not alone in having energy subsidies. Other countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Indonesia have reinstated subsidies in response to rising living costs and public protests.

Highlighting various examples worldwide, including Saudi Arabia and Germany, the importance of considering the impact on the general population’s income bracket is emphasized. Merely relying on “phased subsidy removal” schemes without addressing affordability concerns may not be effective solutions.
