Damagum made this remark in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, emphasizing that despite the party’s internal struggles, Kwankwaso should acknowledge the PDP’s role in his rise and remain grateful.

He expressed hope that Kwankwaso would eventually return to the PDP to help revive it, adding, “The PDP nurtured him and played a significant role in his political success. We still believe he could return and help rejuvenate the party, so we can collectively address the current government’s injustices.”

Damagum further reminded Kwankwaso that the PDP endured even after his departure in 2015, saying, “Despite the challenges we faced then, the PDP was not ‘dead.’ If the party survived his exit then, why would anyone believe it’s irrelevant now?”

He also questioned the success of Kwankwaso’s move to other political platforms, noting, “How many states did he win with his new party? The facts speak for themselves. For over two decades, the PDP has remained strong, producing governors and lawmakers across the country.”

Damagum argued that even if four parties merged without the PDP, they would still not win an election. “We’ve seen this before. Where are those parties now? Even their alliances haven’t yielded the desired results.”

While acknowledging that some of Kwankwaso’s criticisms of the party’s past challenges were valid, Damagum pointed out that efforts to resolve those issues were unsuccessful, as Kwankwaso himself had previously admitted.

He concluded by reaffirming the PDP’s role in Kwankwaso’s career, stating, “The PDP played a significant role in shaping him into the leader he is today. We remain hopeful that he will return to the party and join us in addressing the injustices Nigerians are facing under the current administration.”
