The House Joint Committee, co-chaired by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and Hon. Henry Okogie, convened an emergency session, describing the growing friction as a threat to the “fragile stability” achieved following the removal of fuel subsidies.
The Committee ordered both parties to halt all media hostilities while a legislative investigation, promised to be “swift and conclusive,” is conducted.
Ugochinyere explained that the emergency session was necessitated by the rising tension triggered by Dangote’s allegations against the NMDPRA.
He stated: “This meeting became necessary because the downstream sector is experiencing renewed tension due to claims raised by Alhaji Aliko Dangote against the NMDPRA. We are determined to protect the stability that has been painstakingly achieved.”
The lawmakers emphasized that understanding the root causes of the conflict is essential to crafting lasting solutions.
“We can only develop sustainable solutions by identifying the key issues behind this tension. That is why the committee has formally invited Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the NMDPRA CEO to meet with us and provide clarity on the allegations and counterclaims,” Ugochinyere said.
The Committee also called for restraint from all parties, urging them to refrain from public statements to prevent further escalation.
The conflict erupted after Dangote, speaking at his Lekki refinery, accused NMDPRA CEO Farouk Ahmed of corruption. Dangote alleged that Ahmed spent $5 million on the overseas education of four of his children over six years—a sum he deemed incompatible with a public servant’s income.
Dangote questioned, “…taxpayers deserve accountability. Why should a public official afford such extravagant expenses if public funds were properly managed?”
The NMDPRA has yet to issue a formal response to these allegations.
The Committee disclosed that it has already received petitions concerning critical industry issues, including the allocation of import licenses and the actual capacity of local refineries to meet Nigeria’s daily fuel demand.
“These matters are serious. Some pertain to import licenses, others to the ability of local refineries to satisfy national fuel needs. Our investigation will address these concerns,” Ugochinyere said.
He assured that all stakeholders would be thoroughly examined, stating: “When Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the NMDPRA, and other relevant parties meet with the committee, we will uncover the facts and propose resolutions that ensure sustainable outcomes for the sector.”
