The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into a petition filed against Farouk Ahmed, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), by Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports obtained by Saturday PUNCH, Dangote submitted the petition earlier this week through his legal team, following the withdrawal of a similar complaint from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Dangote had initially approached the ICPC, requesting an investigation into Ahmed over allegations that he spent approximately $5 million on his children’s secondary education in Switzerland—an expense allegedly inconsistent with his earnings as a public officer. Though the petition was later withdrawn, the ICPC had indicated it would continue its inquiries.

A senior EFCC official at the commission’s Abuja headquarters, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the commission had received the petition and that investigations were underway. “They have brought the petition to us, and an investigation has commenced. Serious work is being done on it,” the source said.

The petition, signed by Dangote’s lead counsel Dr. O.J. Onoja (SAN), urges the EFCC to probe allegations of abuse of office and corrupt enrichment against Ahmed and to prosecute him if found culpable. Dangote also expressed readiness to provide documentary and other evidence supporting claims of financial misconduct and impunity.

“We make bold to state that the commission is strategically positioned, along with sister agencies, to prosecute financial crimes and corruption-related offences, and upon establishing a prima facie case, the courts do not hesitate to punish offenders,” the petition read, citing recent court decisions.

Onoja called on EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede to ensure a thorough investigation and take appropriate legal action as necessary.

When contacted, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment but promised a response at a later time. No official statement had been issued as of filing.
