Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, dismissed claims that this deployment was intended to intimidate protesters. He stated, “Troops have always been stationed nationwide for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. This deployment is nothing new.”

In response, Deji Adeyanju sent a letter to the Chief of Army Staff on Tuesday, requesting that military personnel be restricted to barracks during the protests. The letter, titled “Request to Restrict Men of the Nigerian Army to Barracks during the Scheduled 2024 National Protest,” drew parallels with previous instances where military intervention in protests, such as in Kenya and during the 2020 #EndSARS movement, led to increased violence.

Adeyanju’s letter highlighted that managing security during protests should be the responsibility of the Nigerian Police Force, not the military. He warned against the risks of military involvement, noting past instances where such interventions escalated conflicts and resulted in significant loss of life and property.

He urged the Army Chief to withdraw troops to prevent a repeat of violent outcomes seen in past protests.
