Edobor had been subjected to disciplinary measures after allegedly recording and sharing a TikTok video during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Asaba on March 25, 2025. The visit was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where 10,000 professional kits, including scrubs and Crocs, were distributed to midwives across the South-South region.
The college’s management had accused Edobor of breaching student conduct regulations by making an unauthorized recording and posting it online. In a formal letter, the school labeled the post as “malicious” and instructed her to submit a written explanation within 24 hours to avoid disciplinary action.
However, Dr. Onojaeme intervened, overturning the school’s decision and asserting that students’ rights must be safeguarded.
In an official statement, it was announced that “the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor. This action reflects a commitment to upholding the rights of every student in health sciences and related programs.”
The incident gained widespread attention after a video from the event went viral, showing nursing students protesting an honorary title given to the First Lady. When the event’s Master of Ceremony introduced Senator Tinubu as “everyone’s mother,” the students reacted by saying, “Na your mama be this” (meaning “This is your mother”), indicating their disagreement.
Although the reason behind their reaction remains unclear, it comes amid increasing economic hardships and security challenges under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Despite the controversy, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori praised Oluremi Tinubu’s contributions to healthcare, highlighting the positive changes Nigeria is witnessing in the sector.
