In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, on Friday, March 28, 2025, the governor described the act as “barbaric and unacceptable,” stressing that jungle justice has no place in the state. Representing the governor, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Government House, SP Solomon Osaghale, vowed that those responsible for the killings would be identified and prosecuted.

“This kind of barbaric act is unusual in our society and will not be tolerated in the state,” the statement partially read.

Following the governor’s directive, SP Osaghale visited Uromi to assess the situation and revealed that investigations showed the victims had boarded a commercial truck that was stopped by local security operatives. Upon searching the vehicle, firearms were discovered, prompting a mob attack by bystanders.

Condemning the extrajudicial killings, Osaghale emphasized that no individual has the right to take another’s life.

“Upon learning about the incident, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, instructed me to come here immediately and ascertain the facts, as he is deeply concerned about maintaining peace and security in the state. The governor is committed to building a law-abiding, violence-free society,” Osaghale stated.

He assured that those involved in the attack would face justice, disclosing that the Commissioner of Police has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation. Four suspects have already been arrested.

The CSO also called on residents, particularly the Hausa community in Uromi, to remain calm, assuring them that security measures were in place to restore peace and prevent further violence.

Speaking on behalf of the Hausa community, Mallam Aliyu Haruna expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for his swift response, noting that the security presence had reassured his people.

Haruna highlighted that such a violent incident had never occurred in Uromi before, emphasizing the long-standing peaceful coexistence between the Hausa community and the locals.

“We sincerely appreciate Governor Okpebholo’s prompt intervention. This is the first time something like this has happened in Uromi, and it’s surprising because the people here have always been welcoming. For over seventy years, we have lived harmoniously among the indigenes,” Haruna stated.

The Edo State government reiterated its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that such incidents do not recur.
