Former Senator Dino Melaye Criticizes Nigeria’s Budgeting System, Calling it a Channel for Corruption and Elite Enrichment
Former Nigerian Senator Dino Melaye has launched scathing criticism against Nigeria’s budgeting framework, labeling it as a mechanism utilized for defrauding the nation and enriching a select few individuals.
Melaye, who previously represented the Kogi West Senatorial District, asserted that the budgeting process in Nigeria has been manipulated to benefit only a handful of elected officials, particularly through the manipulation of budget figures.
In a statement released during the week and reported by Naija News, Melaye urged the current Senate to intervene and address the pervasive corruption plaguing the country’s economy. He raised concerns over the latest budget presented by the incumbent government, highlighting that it marks the highest-ever allocation to the National Assembly.
According to Melaye, the budgetary allocation for the National Assembly in the 2024 budget proposal was initially set at N197.93 billion. However, he criticized the budget’s contents, suggesting that many items lack national significance and serve as conduits for embezzling public funds.
Melaye pointed out the rapid increase in the budget size after its passage by the National Assembly, emphasizing a lack of due diligence in the process.
