He made the remark while addressing the controversy surrounding embattled lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Speaking at a one-day capacity-building workshop in Abuja, Adaramodu stressed that the Senate operates strictly under established rules, which must be respected at all times.

He also urged journalists covering parliamentary proceedings to help enlighten Nigerians about these rules in order to prevent widespread misconceptions, especially regarding disciplinary measures taken during plenary sessions.

“The National Assembly is not a banana republic. We operate under rules that must be obeyed. It is important that Nigerians understand this, and you—journalists covering the Senate—have a key role to play,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of accurate reporting, the senator pointed to Section 6(1) of the Senate Standing Rules, which empowers the Senate President to assign and reassign seats to lawmakers when necessary.

Adaramodu noted that controversies like the one involving Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan often arise from ignorance of or disregard for these procedures.

He explained: “If a senator is assigned seat number 10 but insists on sitting at seat number 13, that senator will not be recognised by the Senate President. If the lawmaker insists on recognition, problems will certainly arise.”
