He made this remark during plenary while responding to a heated exchange with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, over a disputed seating arrangement.

The session turned chaotic when Akpoti-Uduaghan protested an unauthorized change to her seat, disrupting proceedings. As the session, presided over by Akpabio, was underway, Chief Whip Senator Mohammed Ali Monguno raised a point of order, citing what he termed the “improper seating position” of Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Before Monguno could finish, Akpoti-Uduaghan erupted in protest, prompting the Sergeant-at-Arms to intervene and attempt to escort her from the chamber.

Addressing the disturbance after order was restored, Akpabio likened the scene to South Africa’s parliament, where opposition leader Julius Malema is often told to “sit down.”

Recalling his own experience in the 8th Senate, Akpabio acknowledged that he, too, had protested a seat reassignment but handled it with composure.

“In the 8th Senate, my seat was changed without prior notice. I voiced my displeasure, but the matter was resolved internally,” he said.

Akpabio then suggested reverting to the old microphone system to prevent senators from speaking out of turn, sarcastically apologizing “on behalf of the contractor” for the situation.

Following the resumption of plenary, Senator Jibrin invoked Order 42 (Matter of Personal Explanation) to apologize on behalf of his Kogi colleague.

Meanwhile, Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) defended the seat reassignment, criticizing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reaction as unnecessary.

“When she came in, we extended an arm of friendship to her; we love her too much. I don’t know why she turned the place upside down,” he remarked, urging her to apologize.

In the end, Senate President Akpabio stepped in, offering Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan a conciliatory resolution.
