In a statement released on Wednesday, NGSA Director General, Professor Olusegun Ige, explained that 48 separate tremors had been recorded between September 13 and 16, with increasing intensity over the days. He noted that the tremors were minor, with intensities ranging from III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, and posed no immediate threat to the community.

However, some residents remain unconvinced. Tahir Usman, a long-time resident of Katampe, expressed his concerns, saying that while the tremors had not yet caused serious damage, cracks had started to appear in some buildings. He shared his plans to relocate his family as soon as possible, fearing that the situation could worsen in the future.

Similarly, Jimoh Halidu, another resident who has lived in the area for over 15 years, recounted previous tremor experiences and emphasized that despite government assurances, he would rather prioritize the safety of his family. He noted that while the government had always downplayed the threat, the fear and uncertainty remained palpable for those living in the affected areas.

In Gishiri, another nearby community, a resident identified only as John, urged the government to provide regular updates to keep the public informed. He expressed skepticism about the long-term safety of the area, stressing the need for continuous reassurances from authorities.

Meanwhile, civil servant Mrs. Lilian Udoka, a resident of Maitama, criticized the government’s slow response to the situation. She expressed concern about the safety of her children and warned that even though the tremors were currently minor, there was potential for more severe incidents in the future.
