Easter Economic Woes: Despite Naira Gains, Food Prices Remain Stubbornly High....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

As Easter approaches, a sense of gloom pervades many Nigerian households, with families finding it increasingly challenging to celebrate the holiday as they traditionally would, according to a report by Sunday BUSHRADIOGIST.

Easter, a significant occasion primarily observed by Christians, is traditionally a time for families to come together, share meals, and engage in various festivities. However, this year, the joy of the season is dampened by soaring prices of goods and services, exacerbated by the weakened value of the naira.

Despite efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to bolster the naira by providing each Bureau De Change with $10,000 to be sold at a specified exchange rate, the cost of living continues to rise. The directive aimed to stabilize the currency exchange rate, but it hasn’t translated into relief for consumers, with prices remaining stubbornly high.

Pastor Ginikachi Onuoha, a father of four in Ikosi, Ketu, Lagos, expressed his dismay, stating that he typically cooks abundant meals during Easter and shares them with the less fortunate. However, this year, he finds himself unable to provide adequately for his family or afford new clothes for the occasion.

Similarly, Mrs. Selene Togba, a fish seller at Bonny Cool Beach in Rivers State, remarked on the stark difference in the market atmosphere compared to previous Easters, noting a significant decline in sales and activity.

In Abuja, the capital city, the cost of essential food items has surged. For instance, the price of spaghetti has increased from N850 to N900 within two weeks, while a bag of Nigerian rice has risen from N65,000 to N70,000. Transportation challenges and market scarcity have contributed to these inflated prices.

Even in Ogun State, traders like Mutiya from Ibafo Market report that food prices remain high, indicating that there has been no significant reduction despite the holiday season.

As families across Nigeria grapple with the economic strain, the Easter spirit is overshadowed by financial worries, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by many amid the country’s economic realities.
