Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, had earlier stated that the primary focus of the gathering was to discuss and address the unsettling situation in the West African nation.
In a statement personally signed by President Tinubu on July 26, 2023, as the Chairman of ECOWAS, he had condemned the current political state in Niger and pledged the support of ECOWAS and the international community in defending democracy and promoting democratic governance in the region.
The significance of this meeting was underscored by the telephone calls made by US Vice President Kamala Harris and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to President Tinubu on Thursday.
Both leaders affirmed the support of their respective nations and organizations for the stance taken by ECOWAS and the Nigerian leader in striving to restore constitutional order in Niger.
