The meeting, scheduled to commence at 11:00 am, is expected to involve discussions on selecting a new chairperson to lead the bloc for the upcoming year.

Speculation suggests there may be a proposal to extend Tinubu’s tenure to allow more time for efforts aimed at possibly re-integrating Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso into the ECOWAS fold.

A source within the presidency informed Punch newspaper, stating, “There are differing opinions on whether he should step down or continue, but a decision will be made tomorrow.”

Tinubu was elected Chairman during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, last July. Upon receiving the handover documents from Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Embaló, Tinubu emphasized a commitment to upholding democracy, acknowledging its challenges but affirming its importance as the governing framework.

Throughout his tenure, Tinubu highlighted critical regional issues such as rising insecurity and the surge in military takeovers, underscoring the need for united efforts among member states to address these pressing concerns.
