Following the tragic incident involving the murder of several policemen in the Ughelli area of Delta State, authorities have taken eight suspects into custody. This development comes shortly after five individuals were previously detained in connection to the same case.
The identities of the slain officers, including Inspector Abe Olubunmi (IRT), Inspector Friday Irorere, Sergeant Kuden Elisha, Sergeant Akpan Aniette, Sergeant Ayere Paul, and Sergeant Ejemito Friday, were released by the police. They were ambushed on February 23 during a rescue operation, with six officers confirmed dead and six others still missing.
According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the policemen were attacked while on a mission to locate and rescue their missing colleagues in Ohoro Forest. Five suspects had initially been apprehended in connection to the incident, bringing the total number of suspects in police custody to 13.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Adejobi provided an update on the case, stating that the arrested suspects are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. He highlighted the intensive efforts of police operatives in securing these arrests.
Adejobi emphasized the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure swift and decisive justice for those responsible for such reprehensible acts of violence. He assured the public that the suspects would face trial once investigations are concluded, with credible evidence presented.
Expressing condolences to the families of the fallen officers, Adejobi reaffirmed the determination of the police to hold all perpetrators accountable. He vowed that those involved in the killing of the officers would face the full force of the law, stressing that such actions undermine peace and security in the society.
The Nigeria Police Force remains deeply saddened by the loss of its officers and remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.
