A former Minister of Works, Mike Onolomemen, has leveled accusations against Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, asserting that the governor orchestrated his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Onolomemen, also aspiring to the governorship on the PDP platform, disclosed to the press in Abuja that his departure from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was prompted by Obaseki’s alleged manipulation of the PDP’s senatorial primaries last year. According to Onolomemen, he emerged victorious in the primaries for the Edo Central Senatorial District with 90% of the votes, only to face interference from Governor Obaseki, who supported a candidate that didn’t participate in the primaries.
Narrating the events, Onolomemen stated, “At a time, I thought it was over, the Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki, had come in and was supporting somebody who did not even partake in the primaries to take over the seat. Initially, we thought it was a joke. We went to the high court and from there to the Court of Appeal and from there to the Supreme Court. Funny enough, the Supreme Court gave them judgment. For me, that was the breaking point.”
Expressing confidence in winning the APC governorship primary, Onolomemen emphasized that his recent transition to the party would not be a disadvantage. He pointed out that many current APC members in Edo State were once PDP members, fostering a sense of familiarity and camaraderie among them. He added, “We are comers as it were,” highlighting the shared political history among the party members.
