According to Governor Eno, President Tinubu has directed him to present a Maintenance, Repairs, and Operations (MRO) memo for approval, emphasizing the need for collaboration between Akwa Ibom State and the Federal Government to align with the budget requirements.
“We’ve discussed and requested his support for our Ibom deep seaport and agricultural program on oil palm. The President has graciously agreed for me to submit the memo, addressing requests, including MRO (Maintenance Repair and Operations),” Governor Eno stated.
Elaborating further, Governor Eno highlighted the significance of the Ibom Deep Seaport project, emphasizing its deep depth, which positions it as an ideal transshipment port for the South East and South South geopolitical zones.
“Ibom Deep Seaport has the deepest depth that will accommodate large ships for transshipment. While Lagos is an option, it suffers from congestion. Therefore, we need a deep seaport to cater to the South East, South-South, and the Niger Delta region,” explained the governor.
Furthermore, Governor Eno sought President Tinubu’s backing for the state’s Agricultural program, particularly in the palm oil industry, which has faced stagnation for 28 years.
Noteworthy background information includes the approval of the Outline Business Case (OBC) for the Ibom Deep Seaport project by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on May 11, 2015, according to the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC). The project, spearheaded by the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, is designed as a transshipment port capable of accommodating large vessels with drafts up to 15 meters and loading over 13,000 containers in one voyage. The estimated cost for the construction is $4.6 billion, with the Federal Government approving $2.016 billion as the first installment in December 2020.
Aside from serving as the eastern gateway of Nigeria, the Ibom Deep Seaport is strategically positioned to cater to the West and Central African region, including countries such as JDZ Sao Tome, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Angola, Gabon, Congo, Congo DRC, Chad, among others.
