According to reports gathered by SaharaReporters, the EFCC officials executed the raid around the vicinity of Orita Obele and Road block at approximately 2 am. They forcefully entered rooms within the student lodges, apprehending those present.

Initially mistaken for kidnappers by some students, it was later revealed that the intruders were indeed EFCC personnel, reportedly from the Benin Zonal office.

Disturbingly, the operation involved not only arrests but also the destruction of personal belongings, with reports indicating that several students, including females, were subjected to physical assault.

One source, speaking to SaharaReporters, lamented, “The officials did not only destroy our properties, most of the students arrested were assaulted and brutalised. Even female students were assaulted. Adonai lodge, Celebrity lodge, peace apartment and others in Orita Obele, I’ll update you with more information later.”

This incident raises concerns as it comes in direct contradiction to recent directives issued by EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, who had previously instructed against conducting sting operations during nighttime. The chairman’s directive, aimed at upholding the rule of law and ensuring suspects’ rights, emphasized a commitment to professional conduct and adherence to legal procedures.

In light of these developments, questions arise regarding the adherence of EFCC operatives to the established protocols and whether the actions taken align with the commission’s stated principles.
