Addressing the issue, Kingibe underscored the intricate nature of the separation of powers within the FCT, emphasizing the necessity for a careful examination of this ambiguity.
Kingibe argued that the operational dynamics of the FCT distinguish it from other regions, asserting that every minister should recognize the National Assembly and its members in their supervisory role over executive actions.
Despite the potential challenges posed by the ambiguous division of powers, Senator Ireti Kingibe expressed her unwavering commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to address vital aspects of governance. She specifically highlighted the importance of addressing the people’s needs, prioritizing issues such as security, hunger, water supply, healthcare, and education.
Senator Kingibe stated, “The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, operates differently from other regions; here, the highest elected official is the Senator, as opposed to a governor. Moreover, we only have two representatives in the House of Representatives. The division of powers between the executive and the legislature in the FCT is ambiguous and warrants careful examination.”
Acknowledging the historical context, she emphasized that despite structural challenges, previous ministers have recognized the role of legislators as representatives of the people and collaborated to address the needs of the populace, mitigating systemic flaws.
Kingibe concluded, “It is imperative for every minister to recognize that the National Assembly and its members have a supervisory role over their actions. This oversight appears to be the crux of the current contention. As a senator, there are numerous initiatives I am eager to pursue, provided our budget allows it. I aim to prioritize, especially the smaller, yet significant, aspects of governance.
