In the trending video, the soldier lamented spending a year in the bush in Borno and receiving a pass to visit his family. However, he disclosed that his N50,000 monthly salary fell short when confronted with a transport fare of N35,000 each way, totaling N70,000 for the round trip.

In the poignant video, the soldier expressed his dilemma in pidgin English, stating, “I don’t have any option again; I’m going back to the bush.”

Sources revealed to SaharaReporters that the soldier has been confined to the ‘guardroom’ for several days due to the embarrassing nature of the video as perceived by army authorities.

This incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian soldiers, including low salaries and inadequate welfare packages, despite their sacrifices and dedication to national security. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, recently acknowledged that soldiers earn less than N50,000 monthly, with even less allocated for daily feeding.

SaharaReporters has extensively covered soldiers’ grievances regarding poor treatment, including inadequate feeding, insufficient equipment, and lack of proper medical care. Recent reports have highlighted soldiers’ calls for intervention from President Bola Tinubu and military chiefs to address these pressing issues.

The revelations made by soldiers on the front lines underscore the urgent need for improved welfare and support systems within the Nigerian military. As soldiers continue to risk their lives in the fight against insurgency, their well-being and morale remain crucial factors in achieving lasting peace and security in the nation.
