In a statement released to Vanguard, the agency emphasized that the move is in line with its statutory responsibility as defined under the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which mandates it to regulate and enforce product standards across the country.

SON’s Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, highlighted the dangers of using poor-quality products, especially tyres, which he said are a major cause of road accidents in Nigeria. He explained that tyres, whether brand new or used, have a lifespan of four years. Using them beyond that period significantly increases the risk of blowouts and crashes.

Dr. Okeke also underscored the importance of proper storage and handling, warning that extreme temperatures can degrade tyre quality. He urged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious products to SON offices or via the agency’s toll-free line.

“As a regulatory body, we are fully committed to our mandate,” he said. “Today’s destruction exercise is a clear demonstration of our determination to purge the market of unsafe and substandard goods that threaten the safety, health, and security of Nigerians.”

He concluded with a stern warning: “Let this serve as a reminder to manufacturers, importers, and retailers — SON will not tolerate the circulation of inferior products in the Nigerian market.”
