The Incident: Abduction and Arson
On July 20, 2021, Mrs. Mary Jimoh, 62, experienced a personal tragedy when her brother’s home was invaded. Speaking to reporters on August 10, 2021, she recounted the harrowing ordeal. Her brother, Mr. Tom Oshoakpeme, and his wife, Mrs. Jane Oshoakpeme, were abducted by suspected political assailants. The attackers set the family’s residence at 4 Osazuwa Street, off Uwelu Road, Ogida Quarters in Benin City, on fire. Mrs. Jimoh shared pictures displaying the extensive damage caused by the arson.
Ransom Demand and Police Inaction
The kidnappers demanded a significant ransom, which Mrs. Jimoh managed to raise by selling valuable properties. Despite meeting their demands, the captives were not released. Desperate, she reported the incident to the police. However, she claims that authorities have made little progress in apprehending the culprits. She has since appealed to HRM Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, and other concerned Nigerians for help.
Aftermath: Loss and Despair
The traumatic incident forced Emmanuel Oshoakpeme, an APC youth leader and Mrs. Jimoh’s nephew, to flee for his safety. Although Mr. Tom Oshoakpeme and his wife were eventually released, they sustained severe gunshot injuries. Tragically, Mr. Tom Oshoakpeme succumbed to his injuries despite receiving medical treatment. Mrs. Jimoh is now calling on the government and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Official Response and Ongoing Investigation
DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, confirmed receiving a distress call about the kidnapping and arson. He stated that an investigation is ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and Mr. Oshoakpeme’s death. DSP Nwabuzor assured the family that the police would leave no stone unturned in their quest for justice.
Seeking Justice and Accountability
Mrs. Jimoh’s appeal highlights the need for justice and accountability in the face of political violence. Her plea underscores the broader issue of political instability in Edo State and the urgent need for effective law enforcement and governance to protect citizens from such heinous acts.
The Path Forward: Hope for Change
The tragic events surrounding the Oshoakpeme family are a stark reminder of the human cost of political conflict. As the investigation continues, it is imperative that the authorities not only bring the perpetrators to justice but also address the root causes of political violence to prevent such tragedies in the future.
