Fashola Proposes Monthly Rent Payments To Alleviate Housing Affordability Challenges

During the launch of his book, “Nigerian Public Discourse: The Interplay of Empirical Evidence and Hyperbole,” former Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, advocated for a reconsideration of tenancy laws across states to mandate landlords to collect monthly rents. Highlighting the impact of extended rent periods on the nation, Fashola proposed a reduction in the maximum lease duration. He suggested exploring the possibility of decreasing it from three years to one year, or even further down to six months, aligning it with individuals’ monthly income cycles.

Emphasizing the significance of accurate data, Fashola described it as the most crucial currency globally, asserting that no central bank could produce it. He called for the use of precise data to enhance national planning, particularly in determining population size, water and food requirements, and overall resource allocation for a better quality of life.

Mr. Opeyemi Agbaje, an author and academic who reviewed Fashola’s book, commended its thoughtful and analytical approach, aiming to debunk hyperbolic statements, fallacies, and myths. The book encompasses 16 chapters covering various topics such as corruption, poverty, the Nigerian constitution, minimum wage, and governance.

Agbaje urged Nigerians, especially the media, to seek accurate facts and data, as hyperbole could thrive in an environment lacking proper education on the relevant information. He highlighted the author’s acknowledgment of misconstrued information in the public domain, emphasizing the book’s role in presenting a true and unbiased perspective on various issues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that a panel of experts discussed the pivotal role of data in development during the book launch. Panelists, including Tolu Ogunlesi, a former Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital/New Media; Mrs. Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, a Social Entrepreneur; and Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, a lawyer and historian, unanimously agreed on the necessity of using data as the foundation for policymaking, ensuring impactful changes in society.

The event was attended by notable figures, including the author’s wife, Dame Abimbola Fashola; representatives of the Federal Executive Council; Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; and Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, former Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Sustainable Development Goals. Other attendees included Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo, former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Lagos; Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria; traditional rulers, Lagos White cap chiefs, friends, and family members.
