He advised residents of the FCT to perceive the committee’s establishment as a preemptive action by the government, undertaken to safeguard their lives and possessions.

Adesola underscored the committee’s responsibility to sensitize and engage the proprietors and operators of filling stations, encouraging them to procure and install firefighting equipment while also providing training and refresher courses for their staff on firefighting procedures.

Considering that fire outbreaks at filling stations predominantly occur during the dry season, Adesola urged the committee to initiate awareness campaigns during the current rainy season.

“The committee’s scope of duty encompasses monitoring and ensuring compliance with safe timing for loading and unloading volatile substances, such as PMS and LPG.

It is also tasked with ensuring that all filling stations possess functional, essential, and pertinent fire safety equipment and personnel.

The committee must verify the presence of trained fire safety officers at these stations, prohibit the unloading of volatile substances with customers or vehicles within the station premises, and take action against both black marketers and stations collaborating with them.”

“Furthermore, the committee is empowered to recommend the closure of filling stations that violate fundamental fire safety regulations and those engaging with black marketers.

It may also propose additional safety measures to the FCTA as deemed necessary for public safety,” he added.
