Speaking at a workshop on critical national information infrastructure protection and resilience, organized by the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Ribadu underscored the severity of the situation. He highlighted additional vulnerable sectors, including transportation, national databases, election systems, and digital assets, emphasizing the urgent need for stakeholders to come together to tackle these threats.

Opening the workshop, Ribadu pointed out that these cyber threats are not only limited to infrastructure but extend to defacement of government websites, breaches of sensitive personal data, and compromise of confidential government communications. He warned that any disruption of these assets could significantly impact national security, public health, safety, and the social and economic well-being of Nigerians.

“Our increased use of technology across Nigeria has been met with a rise in cyber threats,” Ribadu stated. “We are now seeing intensified attacks on our telecom systems, banking platforms, power grids, military networks, and other critical sectors. Alongside these, we are also dealing with issues like financial fraud and scams, both domestic and international, that are harming our economy and reputation.”

He added that these challenges are further compounded by threats from malicious actors who engage in online disinformation campaigns and illicit fundraising to incite violence and create unrest.

Ribadu emphasized that Nigeria’s survival depends on these infrastructures. “For Nigeria to function, we need these critical assets—telecommunications, electricity, banking, and other vital systems. They form the backbone of everything we depend on. Protecting and ensuring their continued operation is paramount to maintaining our nation.”

He expressed optimism about the work done so far and the journey ahead, signaling that this workshop marks the beginning of a stronger, more coordinated approach to safeguard Nigeria’s critical infrastructure.
