The Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, revealed these plans during his keynote address at the 2-day meeting of the North East Forum of Honourable Commissioners of Health, inaugurated in Maiduguri. Dr. Muyi Aina, the Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), represented Prof Ali Pate during the event.
The NPHCDA has adopted a three-pronged strategic approach to achieve these goals, which includes institutional strengthening and effective coordination of all primary healthcare services, ensuring efficient, equitable, quality, and trustworthy services, and fostering strong collaboration with stakeholders to enhance frontline health security and provide routine basic healthcare services.
Highlighting the importance of collective interventions, Prof Ali Pate emphasized the necessity for federal, state, and development partners to adopt a people-centered and well-coordinated approach to attain sustainable healthcare goals. He underscored the urgent need to address the persistently poor health conditions in the North East and other regions of Nigeria through unified efforts at both national and sub-national levels.
The Coordinating Minister outlined the Nigerian Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme as the strategic vision guiding the sector towards a common goal of saving lives, reducing physical and financial burdens, and ensuring health for all Nigerians.
During the event, Prof. Baba Gana Umara Zulum, the Executive Governor of Borno State, called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to fulfill its commitments to Borno State. He specifically emphasized the importance of prioritizing enhanced tuberculosis reduction and management, providing DNA machines for gender-based violence management, and constructing hospitals in Biu and Munguno Local Government Areas. Governor Zulum stressed that these commitments from WHO were not mere expressions of goodwill but crucial lifelines for the people of Borno State, addressing the healthcare needs of mothers, victims of violence, and entire communities battling diseases.
