Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has come under the spotlight once again, this time for the apparent gender disparity in his recent appointments. According to an official statement from his Press Secretary, Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the governor has approved an additional 116 Senior Special Assistants, taking his total count of aides to a whopping 210. However, what’s more striking is the glaring gender disparity. Out of the newly appointed 116 aides, only a meagre nine are women. This is a stark contrast to global trends and movements advocating for more balanced gender representation in leadership and governance roles.
The female appointees include Hauwa Halilu (Senior Special Assistant, Library Board), Hauwa Gadonkaya (Senior Special Assistant, Primary Health Care), Nadiya Fagge (Senior Special Assistant, Special Assignments- PPS), Asiya Mukhtar (Senior Special Assistant, Women Education), Binta Salisu (both for Radio/Women and a separate role), Mufida Rashid (Digital Media), and Hauwa Halilu (Library Board).
