FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday To Honour Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London after a brief illness.

This was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to the statement, the day has been set aside for national reflection and to celebrate the life and legacy of the late elder statesman.

“President Tinubu has approved Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a work-free day for all Nigerians, in remembrance of a man whose life was defined by sacrifice, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to national service,” the statement read.

The government further urged Nigerians to use the day to offer prayers for the repose of the late president’s soul and to emulate his virtues of patriotism and integrity.

Late President Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in conjunction with the Federal Government.
