The meeting aimed to brainstorm and provide recommendations to the minister on the optimal approach to digitalize government operations across ministries, departments, agencies, and other structures. Participants emphasized the immediate requirement for ICT infrastructure to facilitate seamless data sharing among government agencies.
Minister Tijani introduced his vision for digitalization, termed Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). He emphasized that sharing data is not only crucial for combating fraud but also essential for promoting government effectiveness. Tijani explained that appropriate data sharing would enable targeted interventions, such as identifying and supporting economically disadvantaged citizens or understanding educational needs.
The minister urged stakeholders to support the DPI initiative, highlighting the significance of using technology to improve citizens’ access to government services. He expressed the need for collaboration among federal government technology leaders to provide effective leadership in leveraging technology.
Regarding the readiness of the government to initiate digitalization, Minister Tijani acknowledged existing technologies like the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and telecommunications services. However, he stressed that these initiatives often operate in isolation, underscoring the importance of data sharing to create a cohesive and interconnected system.
The minister outlined that the DPI initiative aims to establish a unified government platform, consolidating services on a single website for streamlined accessibility. When asked about the timeline for implementation, Tijani suggested that tangible benefits should become apparent within the next 12 months, signaling a transformative shift in the government’s use of technology.
