The Nigerian federal government recently revealed ongoing discussions and negotiations regarding the reopening of land borders with the Benin Republic and Niger Republic. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), shared this information with journalists following the inauguration of the National Single Window Project in Abuja’s Aso Rock Villa.
Adeniyi emphasized that substantial discussions are underway between the countries to prevent the recurrence of issues that led to the initial border closure if the borders are reopened.
He stated, “Regarding the opening of the land borders, consultations are already underway, some at very high levels. I recently engaged with my counterparts in Benin Republic over the past weekend. Earlier, I visited our borders with the Niger Republic.”
“We are examining the factors that prompted the border closure initially, working diligently to prevent their reoccurrence. I am pleased to report that we are making consistent progress,” Adeniyi informed reporters.
Adeniyi also mentioned the Customs’ commitment to “continue consulting” and “seek guidance” from President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the objective of ensuring well-secured borders. He further highlighted the deployment of the Single Window at ports and border stations as a measure to enhance border security and operational efficiency.
The closure of borders in 2019, during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was purportedly aimed at promoting local food production and combating smuggling and associated corruption.
