CAF’s Appeal Board overturned Senegal’s 1-0 victory in the Rabat final, ruling that the team’s walk-off during a stoppage-time penalty incident violated Articles 82 and 84. As a result, the match was recorded as a 3-0 forfeiture in favour of Morocco.

Rooney described the decision as unreasonable, insisting that Senegal had earned their victory on the field and questioning the fairness of awarding the title under such circumstances.

Senegal’s football federation, Fédération Sénégalaise de Football, has announced plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

African football legend George Weah also reacted, expressing concern over the implications of the decision.

Weah emphasised that the referee’s authority on the pitch should be final, arguing that once a match is concluded, its result should not be altered.

He warned that reversing completed match outcomes could damage trust in football, suggesting that it creates a dangerous precedent where administrative decisions override events on the field.

The former Ballon d’Or winner further stated that the ruling threatens the credibility and integrity of African football, raising questions about fairness and consistency in decision-making.

He called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport to urgently review the case, stressing that football outcomes should be determined during play—not after the final whistle.
