Represented by Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, the Medical Director of the Centre, Obasanjo expressed alarm over the increasing migration of healthcare professionals abroad due to poor working conditions. He warned that unless the government addresses the root causes of this migration, the country’s future could be jeopardized.

Obasanjo emphasized that resident doctors are crucial to Nigeria’s healthcare system, stating, “It is essential for governments at all levels to ensure adequate welfare packages for doctors, without whom it would be impossible to provide meaningful medical services.” He urged authorities to prioritize the welfare of doctors, highlighting the serious concerns surrounding their safety, including incidents of abduction.

The former President also addressed the alarming trend known as the ‘Japa syndrome,’ where many healthcare specialists are leaving the country, rendering several sub-specialties non-operational. He cautioned that without improvements in remuneration and working conditions, more health workers would seek opportunities abroad, exacerbating the challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Health Commissioner Dr. Tomi Coker, encouraged doctors to remain in Nigeria to serve its growing population and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing healthcare workers’ concerns. He also called on doctors to engage in managing medical waste and advocate for environmental issues, given that medical waste accounts for a significant portion of global waste.

Dr. Dele Abdulahi, National President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, voiced concerns over insecurity and economic hardship affecting healthcare professionals. He recognized the resilience of resident doctors in providing quality healthcare amid these challenges. Abdulahi also called for the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a colleague abducted in Kaduna, while demanding improved working conditions and fair remuneration for healthcare workers.

He encouraged his fellow doctors to stay committed to delivering the best care possible and noted that the conference serves as a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and discussing the future of Nigeria’s health sector.
