In a statement that has ignited controversy, former reps candidate Obinna Nwosu has brought attention to the potential legal ramifications for presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi if they were to release their campaign expenditure details. It’s worth noting that none of the mentioned candidates—Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP)—have disclosed their campaign expenditures. Nwosu drew attention to the fact that in the last election, Omoyele Sowore was the sole presidential candidate who publicly revealed his campaign expenditure.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Obinna Nwosu expressed his perspective on the matter, stating, “If Atiku, Kwakwanso or Peter Obi are to publish their campaign expenditure, they will likely find themselves in prison because each of them most likely violated the N5 Billion spending limit. President Tinubu cannot go to prison because he already has presidential immunity. To encourage accountability, INEC should adopt a similar pattern to the USA and remove that ridiculous spending limit.”
This revelation sheds light on the challenges surrounding transparency in campaign financing within Nigeria’s political landscape. As the debate over campaign expenditure disclosure continues, Nwosu’s statements underscore the need for electoral reforms and increased accountability measures to foster a more transparent democratic process.
