The commencement of the trial for individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism, as promised by the Federal Government, has faced delays. Initially scheduled to begin two weeks after November 16, 2023, the date remains unknown. The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, had suggested the possibility of adopting virtual trials to prevent further delays, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing funds for this purpose……..CONTINUE READING
The reported cause of the delay is concerns related to the safety of judges, counsel, and witnesses due to the sensitive nature of the cases. Security issues, particularly at the Kainji Prosecution Project Phase IV in Niger State, are being reviewed by the Ministry of Justice. Cases of terrorism financiers have reportedly started in Abuja, while the trial of main terrorists in Kainji is yet to commence.
Efforts have been made since July of the previous year to initiate the trial of about 2,000 Boko Haram members arrested for terrorism activities. The plan involved eight judges handling the special trial in Kainji under the protection of Operation Safe Corridor. However, logistical challenges, including securing transportation for judges and lawyers, have contributed to the delay.
The Ministry of Justice is currently reviewing options, considering the safety of all involved parties. The adoption of virtual trials remains under consideration to expedite the legal process and address security concerns. The exact date for the trial commencement is pending further developments and decisions by the Ministry of Justice.
