From Fame To Struggle: Portable Explains Why Many Artistes Falter After Leaving Top Labels
Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has attributed the struggles of some artistes who leave top record labels to disloyalty. The ‘Za Zu’ crooner made these comments during a recent appearance on Isbae U’s podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
Portable acknowledged claims that Davido, Olamide, Wizkid, and Burna Boy do not deliberately block other artistes from succeeding in the industry, saying this is largely true.
Speaking in pidgin English, he stated, “Dem say people wey comot Olamide label no blow again. Dem say people wey comot for Don Jazzy or Davido label no blow again. Dem no dey loyal ni.”
Addressing his public persona, Portable emphasized that his music career would continue to thrive regardless of public opinion. “Na wetin I like I dey do. Dis thing wey I dey use make money, na him I dey do,” he said.
He further claimed that his contributions have not always received due recognition. He highlighted that Olamide’s international acclaim was boosted through their collaboration on his Zazu Zeh single.
Portable also alleged that fellow artiste Zlatan Ibile blocked his attempts to collaborate with Davido, limiting his access to potential opportunities in the industry.
