From Finance Minister To Resignation: Adeosun Reveals Reason Behind Leaving Buhari Administration
Former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has revealed that her resignation from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari was driven by the actions of “powerful enemies.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
She explained that these individuals seized on the controversy surrounding her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate to orchestrate her exit from office.
Adeosun made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Inside Sources, scheduled to air on Friday, with excerpts broadcast on Thursday as part of the station’s news bulletin.
Recall that Adeosun resigned in 2018 amid allegations that she submitted a forged NYSC certificate as part of her credentials.
Speaking in the interview, she said internal opposition within the Buhari-led government exploited the controversy to pressure her resignation.
“I’m not confused about the fact that I had powerful enemies who saw an opportunity and said, ‘Let’s get rid of her,’” Adeosun said.
She added that she personally informed President Buhari of the situation and her intention to pursue legal action, emphasizing that it would have been impossible to remain in office while suing the government.
“No one resigned in finance, but I did. On the day I resigned, I went to see the president and said, ‘Mr. President, I need to go, but I will take this to court to clear my name,’” she stated.
Adeosun said Buhari supported her decision, cautioning against sacrificing one’s reputation for political office.
“He said, ‘I absolutely support you. Because these names are inherited by our children and grandchildren. Are you going to destroy your name just to stay as minister? For what?’” she recalled.
Following her resignation, Adeosun proceeded to sue the Federal Government, insisting that stepping down was the only ethical course of action.
“You can’t sue the government and simultaneously remain in it. You have to go. I believe it was the right thing to do,” she said.
In July 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that Adeosun could not be penalized or have her position forfeited over the NYSC certificate issue.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo held that Adeosun was not legally required to present an NYSC certificate to hold public office in Nigeria. However, the court did not rule on the allegation that the certificate in question was forged.
