Fubara: APC Rocks With Tension Over Wike-Basiru Clash

The ongoing political clash between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, over Rivers State politics has intensified tensions within the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The dispute revolves around Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. While Fubara’s defection appears to have won him favour with parts of the party hierarchy, Wike has expressed displeasure and remains opposed to anyone supporting the governor.

Wike had earlier warned Basiru to stay away from Rivers politics, describing the state as a “no-go area” for political interference. He issued the warning during a thank-you visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, accusing certain political actors of exploiting what he claimed was N600 billion in the state’s coffers to make reckless statements.

The minister’s remarks followed controversial comments attributed to APC Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, who reportedly referred to Fubara as “the so-called governor” and suggested he could not secure a second term without Wike’s backing.

In response, Basiru described Giadom’s remarks as unfortunate and emphasised that the office of governor must be respected, regardless of political differences. He also warned Wike to desist from actions he described as attempts to destabilise the ruling party, suggesting that the minister should resign from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet if he cannot refrain from interfering in APC affairs.

Reacting to the dispute, a senior APC official told Daily Post that the public spat was “embarrassing and unnecessary.” The official cautioned that the ongoing war of words could damage the party’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general election and urged party leaders to prioritise unity over personal influence and ambition.

“I must state categorically that this fiery exchange is embarrassing and unnecessary. It is not doing the APC any good and is instead harming the party’s image,” the official said.
“If this continues unchecked, it could weaken our unity and cost the party politically, especially in a swing state like Rivers.”
