Fubara Under Watch: ADC Raises Alarm As Political Tensions Rock Rivers State
The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has said the party is carefully observing the evolving political situation in Rivers State and will only make its position known after a detailed evaluation of events.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Abdullahi explained that the party is taking time to fully assess the developments before responding. He noted that the ADC prefers to study the situation and its implications before adopting an informed stance.
Political tension in Rivers State heightened following the decision of the State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The move has generated widespread attention, particularly because Governor Fubara recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with a substantial number of lawmakers from the state.
On December 5, 2025, about 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC. Governor Fubara followed shortly after, formally joining the ruling party on December 9, 2025. The wave of defections had raised expectations that alignment with the APC would shield the governor from political threats.
The launch of impeachment proceedings, however, came as a surprise to many observers who believed the governor’s defection would offer him political protection.
Meanwhile, relations between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have remained strained, with repeated public exchanges intensifying the political rivalry.
Wike had earlier warned that Fubara would be politically finished if he secured a second term as governor, while Fubara had countered by asserting his influence in Rivers politics, pointing to his APC membership card numbered 001 as evidence of his standing within the party.
This latest move represents the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara. The first occurred in 2023, followed by another in 2025 shortly before the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.
As the 2026 impeachment process unfolds, uncertainty remains over whether the effort will succeed or if the governor will once again withstand the political challenge.
