In a statement on Thursday through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke explained that the decision resulted from a resolution by the State Security Council, which had expressed concerns about the increasing number of trucks on Osun roads.

He emphasized that ensuring public safety was the primary reason for this decision. The statement addressed allegations of political bias from the opposition, led by the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which deemed the ban unnecessary and demanded evidence regarding the bridge’s safety.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) countered that the governor’s decision was informed by warnings from motorists using the Olaiya Flyover. Adeleke highlighted his commitment to protecting public assets and residents, particularly in light of recent developments.

“Several technical reports have indicated a deterioration in certain sections of the bridge,” he stated. He noted that engineers had approached the government as early as January to conduct an integrity test, and recent evaluations by national construction leaders echoed the need for urgent action.

Adeleke urged the public to inspect the bridge themselves, stressing that while technical reviews are ongoing, a surge in heavy-duty truck traffic—prompted by road closures along the Ibadan-Ogbomoso route—necessitated this precautionary ban to prevent potential incidents.

He concluded by affirming that the resolution to ban heavy trucks was made during a State Security Council meeting, involving security commanders who acted in the best interest of public safety without any political bias.
