Speaking at the inaugural Engineer Abdullahi Sule Colloquium in Lafia, themed “Technology-Driven Entrepreneurship as a Panacea for Unemployment and Catalyst for Economic Growth and Development,” the governor highlighted his vision for promoting skill-based education among youths in the state. He stressed that corporations prioritize skilled workers over mere certifications.
Recalling his experience, Sule disclosed that he worked as a welder at night while attending school during the day to support himself.
“When I graduated from Government Technical College Bukulu in 1980, I secured a scholarship to study at Indiana University in the U.S. To survive, I worked as a welder at night and attended classes during the day, using the skills I had acquired,” he stated.
He further noted that after graduation, his first job was based solely on his abilities rather than academic credentials.
“In my university years, I worked at night, and when I graduated, no one asked for my certificate. What mattered was my skill and ability to perform the job,” he added.
Governor Sule also announced plans to provide technical training and financial support for would-be retirees and young people, equipping them with starter packs to promote self-employment and economic independence.
