Government Announces Enrollment Of 750,000 Nigerians In New Health Insurance Program

The Nigerian Federal Government has revealed that 750,000 citizens are now enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme. During the third edition of the ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, made this announcement. He highlighted the upcoming initiative, led by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, to digitize the nation’s healthcare system within the next two weeks.

In August 2024, Dr. Salma Anas-Ibrahim, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, had previously stated that the government aimed to extend health coverage to over 50 million Nigerians, especially the vulnerable and elderly, by 2027. Emphasizing the commitment to universal health coverage, she asserted that no one would be excluded from these efforts.

The Federal Government had launched operational guidelines for the 2022 National Health Insurance Authority Act in October 2023, striving to ensure affordable healthcare services for all Nigerians. Professor Pate, in the recent briefing, acknowledged significant progress in expanding health insurance coverage, citing the enrollment of approximately 750,000 more Nigerians since the beginning of the administration.

Pate emphasized the government’s dedication to providing quality healthcare for all citizens through initiatives such as the Vulnerable Group Fund and the Basic Health Care Provision Fund. He also announced advancements in tertiary healthcare services, with plans to develop infrastructure, technology, and human capital in twelve tertiary hospitals.

Addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals, Pate mentioned collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to increase the admission of medical students to medical schools. Furthermore, he revealed plans to digitize the healthcare system within the next two weeks, aiming to enhance efficiency and improve patient outcomes through comprehensive digital programs.
