Despite decades of concerted efforts, the country has failed to make substantial progress in reducing the prevalence of malaria. Prof. Pate revealed that Nigeria shoulders a staggering 30% of the global malaria burden, registering 68 million cases and 194,000 deaths annually as of 2021, prompting a call for immediate and effective intervention strategies.

“Nigeria continues to grapple with a high malaria burden, despite implementing elimination programs for over 70 years. In 2021 alone, the country contributed 30% to the global burden, with an estimated 68 million cases and 194,000 deaths,” lamented the minister.

Prof. Pate advocated for a comprehensive review of the existing approaches to tackle this public health crisis. He highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for initiatives aimed at retraining health workers and enhancing primary health centers as part of the Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme. The minister stressed the importance of strong collaboration with partners such as the Malaria Alliance, RBM Partnership, and WHO Global Malaria Programme for achieving success.
