A circulating video has revealed the moment when Yakubu Gowon, the former military Head of State, was unexpectedly ambushed and pressured to address the public in Hausa while discussing the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War.
Expressing his surprise and reluctance, Gowon exclaimed, “Wait a minute, who told you I am going to do it in Hausa? Oh my goodness, look, for almost 80 years, I have been always speaking mostly in English… This is an ambush. This is a coup. No, No…. My Hausa is not good enough to say it in Hausa.”
This incident occurred as Gowon spoke to newsmen following his visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.
During the interaction, Gowon reassured Tinubu not to be troubled by criticisms from Nigerians regarding his performance since assuming office in May 2023. Reflecting on his own experience, Gowon recalled being criticized for being too slow in fighting the war and facing calls for discussions, emphasizing that those critics might not have fully grasped the complexities on the ground during that period.
