Governor Soludo Announces Local Government Elections In Anambra State

The executive bill, introduced by the majority leader Ikenna Ofodeme, aims to empower the executive branch to oversee local government elections once it becomes law. Ofodeme noted that the bill, comprising approximately 110 clauses, will benefit both governmental and non-governmental interests in the state.

Governor Soludo’s administration has faced widespread calls to fulfill its promise of conducting local government elections, as outlined in his inaugural speech on March 17, 2022. During the bill’s second reading, Ofodeme emphasized Soludo’s commitment to a transparent and impartial election process by submitting the electoral bill to the state House of Assembly.

Patrick Okafor, representing Onitsha North 2, supported the motion, highlighting the governor’s dedication to delivering democratic dividends to the grassroots through elected local government officials. Noble Igwe, representing Ogbaru Constituency 1, commended the lawmakers’ efforts over the past six months to empower the Commission to ensure credible elections.

Nkechi Ogbuefi, representing Anaocha Constituency 1, and Emmanuel Nwafor, representing Orumba South Constituency, praised the governor for keeping his promise to conduct local government elections within two years and for empowering grassroots governance.

Augustine Ike of Nnewi North Constituency and Patrick Udeoba of Anambra West Constituency recognized the bill’s potential to serve as a model for local government elections in both the state and the country. They noted its alignment with the 2022 Electoral Act provisions.

Obi Nweke, representing Anambra East Constituency, and Anayo Okpalaeke, representing Aguata Constituency 1, described the bill as timely, reflecting the government’s commitment to prioritize grassroots needs.

Speaker of the House, Somtochukwu Udeze, assured the executive branch of the lawmakers’ support in delivering on their promises to the people. He urged members to thoroughly review the bill before its final reading and passage
