Governors Disagree With FG Over New Minimum Wage
Governors, represented by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), are in disagreement with the Federal Government regarding the recently approved new minimum wage for workers. The federal government had recently given the green light to a salary increase ranging between 25% and 35% for civil servants across the Consolidated Salary Structures, effective from January 1, 2024.
In a statement released by Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), it was disclosed that the salary increases also extend to pensioners on the Defined Benefits Scheme, with increments ranging from 20% to 28%, also effective from January 1, 2024.
On the other hand, organized labor proposed a monthly minimum wage of N615,000 for workers, urging the federal government to endorse the proposal. However, at a meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, the governors, in a communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, stated that they are currently assessing their fiscal capacities to determine a sustainable and improved minimum wage.
The governors highlighted that the 37-member tripartite committee tasked with deliberating on the national minimum wage is still engaged in consultations and is yet to conclude its work. They expressed appreciation for the dedication and patience exhibited by Nigerian workers amidst various challenges.
Emphasizing their commitment to the negotiation process, the governors assured that better wages will result from ongoing discussions. Additionally, they extended condolences to Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State following recent petrol tanker and gas explosions in their respective states. The governors advocated for proper maintenance of trucks, especially those transporting compressed natural gas (CNG), and recommended appropriate training for drivers.
